Faith Is Not a Feeling — Faith Is a Choice
In a culture that often equates faith with emotion, it’s easy to misunderstand what biblical faith truly is. Many ask, “Do I feel faithful enough?” or “Is my faith real if I don’t feel it today?” The answer is both timeless and life-changing: Faith is not a feeling. Faith is a choice.
Why This Matters
Feelings are powerful and real, but they’re often unreliable. Joy, peace, and assurance may fill your heart one day, only to be replaced by doubt, fear, or discouragement the next. If your faith is tied to emotions, it will be unstable—like building a house on shifting sand.
But biblical faith stands on the rock-solid foundation of God’s unchanging Word.
Faith Comes by Hearing
The apostle Paul explains in Romans 10:17 (NKJV):
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Faith starts with hearing God’s promises in Scripture. It is a response to truth, not temporary feelings. When your heart is weak or wavering, faith chooses to believe what God has said rather than what your emotions suggest.
An Act of the Will
Faith is a deliberate choice. Joshua challenged Israel:
“Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…” (Joshua 24:15)
Choosing God means trusting Him even when you don’t feel like it. The heroes of faith in Hebrews 11 show us this reality. Noah built the ark before the flood; Abraham left his homeland for an unknown land. Their faith wasn’t dependent on feelings—it was rooted in obedience to God’s Word.
Trusting God When Emotions Falter
The apostle Paul understood what it meant to be crushed by trials:
“We were burdened beyond measure… that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead.” (2 Corinthians 1:8-9)
Faith isn’t an emotional high; it’s a firm trust in God’s sustaining power even in weakness. It’s saying, “Though I do not feel strong, I choose to rely on God’s promises.”
Walking by Faith, Not by Feelings
The Christian life is described as walking by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). Feelings are like shifting shadows; faith is standing on an immovable foundation built on God’s Word.
Why Should You Choose Faith Today?
Because God’s promises are sure. When worry whispers that God has forgotten you, faith declares: “He will never leave me nor forsake me” (Hebrews 13:5). When guilt shouts condemnation, faith stands on “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). When fear looms, faith clings to “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).
The Ultimate Choice: Salvation Faith
Faith is a choice that begins with trusting Christ alone for salvation. Romans 10:9 (NKJV) promises:
“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
This saving faith is not dependent on feelings but on the finished work of Christ on the cross, a decision that changes everything.
Encouragement for Your Journey
As you walk this path, remember the Blessed Hope of Jesus’ imminent return (Titus 2:13). This hope calls you to live by faith—holding fast to God’s sure promises, regardless of how you feel each day. Faith fuels persistence, holiness, and joy as you anticipate the glorious day when Christ will come for His Church.
Reflection for Today
• What feelings are you leaning on that need to be surrendered to God’s Word?
• What promises from Scripture can you claim to strengthen your faith?
• How can you choose faith in God today, even if your emotions say otherwise?
Memory Verse
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” — Romans 10:17 (NKJV)
Faith is not fragile or fleeting. It is a resolute choice—rooted in the living Word of a faithful God—and the pathway to joy and victory for every believer. May you be encouraged to choose faith today, no matter what feelings may come.
In Christ,
