Mary and Martha: Finding Rest at Jesus’ Feet in a Busy World
Scripture:
Luke 10:41-42 (ESV) –
“But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.’”
In a world that celebrates hustle and endless to-do lists, Jesus offers a gentle counterpoint through the story of Mary and Martha. This familiar narrative isn’t just a lesson in hospitality—it’s a call to prioritize resting in His presence amid life’s demands.
Martha’s Burden: Good Intentions, Distracted Heart
Martha welcomed Jesus into her home with zeal, eager to serve. Yet, her preparations soon overwhelmed her, leaving her “anxious and troubled about many things” (Luke 10:41). Her heart was in the right place, but her busyness pulled her focus from the One who mattered most.
Sound familiar? How often do we rush through ministry, family, or daily tasks—worried about what’s undone—only to miss Jesus’ quiet presence?
Mary’s Choice: The Better Portion
Mary, however, chose differently. She sat at Jesus’ feet, soaking in His words with undivided attention. Her choice wasn’t neglect of duty but recognition of a deeper need: intimate fellowship with her Lord.
Jesus affirmed her, saying she had “chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away” (Luke 10:42). This “good portion” is the spiritual rest and nourishment found in Christ—something our weary souls crave in a restless world.
A Call to Rest, Not Retreat
Jesus wasn’t scolding Martha into laziness; He was inviting her—and us—to reorder our priorities. True rest isn’t idleness but a peace that renews us, drawing strength from Him (John 15:5, NKJV: “Without Me you can do nothing”). It’s pausing to pray, meditating on Scripture, and listening for His voice above the chaos.
When we rest in Him, our service flows from His power, not our strain.
Reflection for Today
Where do you feel Martha’s anxiety creeping in—perhaps in your schedule, relationships, or even faith? Take a moment to choose Mary’s portion. Sit quietly with Jesus, even for five minutes, and let His presence refresh you. Your worth isn’t in what you accomplish but in who you are in Him.
Practical Challenge
Today, carve out time to read Luke 10:38-42 again. Ask Jesus to show you one area where you can trade worry for worship. Let His peace guide your next step.
Gospel Invitation
If you’ve never experienced this rest, turn to Christ. His sacrifice secures your freedom (John 19:30, NKJV), and He invites you to begin today (Romans 10:9). Reach out if you’d like to know more!
Blessed Hope
As we await His return (Titus 2:13, NKJV), let’s rest in His presence, ready to shine His light.

In a world that constantly pushes us toward striving and hurry, it’s so freeing to remember that the “better portion” is simply sitting with Jesus. Thank you for drawing out the gentle invitation in this passage—resting in Him truly changes everything.
